2027 Handbook
Our Handbook lists all our current courses, with brief descriptions of each, requirements and possible pathways to University and TAFE, as well as careers and work. Whatever your intended pathway, we will help you get there.
Subject selections will be made in Term 3 and a final list of subjects for the following year finalised in Term 4.
Please note that our Course Handbook provides the most accurate and up to date information regarding courses and pathways available. Every attempt is made to provide the courses a student selects. At times, however, courses may not be available if there is an insufficient student interest. In the event that a course is unavailable, we will provide advice on appropriate course choices and alternate pathways.What does it all mean?
Tasmanian Assessment Standards and Certification (TASC)
Students can choose to study Tasmanian Assessment Standards and Certification (TASC) courses. These are fully acredited by TASC and are also listed on the TASC website. We also offer access to a number of University of Tasmania courses via the High Achiever Program or University Connections Program.
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
As a Registered Training Institution we are able to offer a wide variety of full accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs, and School-based Apprenticeships. You can view current programs in our course Handbook or find out more about studying VET at GYC.
Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
A student will be awarded the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) by TASC if they meet certain requirements. Your TCE demonstrates your adult level ability in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.

Australia Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
The ATAR is used often used by Australian universities to allocate places to students. The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number ranging from zero to 99.95. This number shows a university how your overall academic achievement in senior secondary education compares with other students in the same year group.

Any five courses – these may be a mixture of level 2 and 3 courses and VET – constitute a full load. All Year 11 students are expected to study an English, Maths and Religious Education course.
Year 11 students can study four level 3 or 4 courses (and have a study line). One of these must be Studies of Religion 3.

Four courses at level 2 or above (provided 75 points were gained in Year 11)

Obtaining your TCE is important and there are multiple ways to do this. You can do level 3 and 4 courses, level 1 and 2 courses, VET courses or a combination of these.
You will need standards “ticks” in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT and 120 credit points
Most courses are 15 points each.
Five subjects in Year 11 = 75 points.
Four subjects in Year 12 = 60 points so 135 points in total.
You will need to achieve the TCE to gain an ATAR score

The ATAR is determined by combining the Tertiary Entrance Score gained for each Level 3/4 subject for your Five best subjects over two years of study.
