Today, many of our students begin their Mid-Year Exams. There is a mix of anticipation and nervousness in the air. No matter how well prepared they are, many students will likely find themselves frantically reviewing their notes the night before.

Exams can be a significant source of stress for some students. It’s important to remember that these assessments are just one of many opportunities to demonstrate learning and growth. If students feel disappointed with their results, please remind them that one exam does not define their talent or future. What matters most is that they gave their best effort—and that effort is something to be proud of. With your support, they can continue working toward their goals and dreams.

5. Review past assessment tasks — Go back to the assessment tasks done so far this year.

6. Give Studiosity a try — Free 24/7 online study support program.

7. Use Active Recall — Test your recall. Frequent retrieval strengthens the memory pathways of the brain.

8. Space out your practice — Don’t cram the night before!

9. Use Multiple Modes.

10. Try Study Systems — Search online for these systems — SQ3R, PQ4R, Feynman Technique, Leitner System.

11. Ask for help

12. Use AI for good, not evil — asking ChatGPT how it can help you to study – here are its suggestions. Bear in mind you will need to check the accuracy of its answers!

13. Stress check-in — Low level of stress can be beneficial. If it gets out of control, talk to someone.

Girls’ 1st XVIII

After defeating The Friends’ School in the Southern Final a week prior, the GYC Girls’ 1st XVIII defeated Launceston Church Grammar in an emphatic victory in the State SATIS Final at Abbotsfield Park on Wednesday, June 11.

GYC’s first goal occurred within the first minute of the game, and the scoreboard pressure didn’t stop there, in an incredible display of teamwork and selfless acts for the common cause. GYC dominated the contest all over the ground, leaving their opponents in awe.

The midfield, led by Evie Bingham, Arielle Cannell, and Annabella Burt, dominated the stoppages and clearance work, continually putting GYC deep in attack, where Amber Bumford (5 goals) and Millie Richardson (4 goals) proved too smart and elusive for their defenders.

The backline was rock solid, with Caitlin Stevanovich and Mia Anderson starting many attacking forays with excellent rebounding from our defensive 50 to set up goal-scoring opportunities. Such was the dominance of the defence that Grammar managed to score their only goal within the last minute of the game. As has been the case all season, coach Mackenzie Banks regularly shifted players around, with Stevanovich going forward in the last quarter to jag 3 majors in a fine display of speed and skill.

In the end, the scoreboard read GYC 21.16.142 to LCGS 1.0.6, continuing what had been a dominant undefeated season.

Congratulations to coach Mackenzie Banks and Team Manager John Covington for a fantastic season—but most importantly, congratulations to all the girls who signed up for football and participated during the rostered games. It wasn’t possible to play everyone in the final team, but every player who played contributed to a fantastic season should be proud of their efforts.

Boys’ 1st XVIII

The Boys’ 1st XVIII won the State SATIS Final in an excellent display of skill and will against our archrival Hutchins at The Hutchins School War Memorial Oval on Saturday, June 14.

Hutchins entered the game as deserved favourites after an undefeated season saw them host the game in front of an excellent home crowd. GYC had lost two rostered games against Hutchins and St Patrick’s College in the statewide roster, while victories against Launceston Grammar School and Scotch Oakburn saw us secure third spot and make our way to Launceston for the semi-final against St Pat’s.

After a sluggish start, GYC bounced back from 23 points down early in the third quarter to storm home and win by 9 points with a fine display of determined team football, setting up a mouth-watering contest with The Hutchins School.

After making 8–10 changes in each rostered game, it was great to see the team settle for both finals, and that was evident in the cohesion on display in the back end of the semi-final and certainly the final.

Hutchins were no match for the skill and game smarts displayed by GYC, particularly in the first quarter as the game settled. Archie Watt typified the attitude of all players with several defensive tackles early on, while Hugh McCallum and Lucas Kamaric picked up possessions at will, and Tom Geappen proved unstoppable up forward.

Skipper Tom Prokopiec was outstanding—not only in negating his opponent but also in instructing his defensive team and instigating many attacking moves from our defensive 50. Joining him in creating excellent defensive rebound and run were Jack Gilligan and Archie Devine.

Jade Clark became a vital link player across all lines, and his impact on the game was decisive. His two goals showed great skill and poise. Anthony Volta, Jack Miller, and Coen Clark attacked the ball ferociously in our forward 50, creating many turnovers and rebounding opportunities.

Overall, it was a dominant display of intelligent team football, awesome skill, great attack on the football, and ferocious pressure. While the second half was relatively even, we were always in control and never looked like being headed at the final siren.

Well done to all players, and a big thank you to those Year 12 boys who committed to playing school football for both years, led by skipper Tom Prokopiec and vice-captain Jade Clark. Both leaders were awesome in generating a great spirit and commitment to school football. What a memory.

With close to half the team in Year 11—and with some other players in the year just missing selection—it’s a great start to next season. Congratulations to coach Mark Beck and assistant coach Charlie Hastie in driving the team. While at times the waters were a bit rough for the canoe, after a few small repairs it remained strong—and by finals time there were no leaks.

Boys’ 2nd XVIII

After a dominant undefeated 2nd XVIII Southern SATIS campaign, GYC went down to St Patrick’s College in the SATIS State Final at The Hutchins School War Memorial Oval on Saturday, despite dominating the match.

Inaccurate kicking proved costly in the end, with St Pat’s kicking the final two goals to win by 11 points. Hitting the post three times and missing five shots inside 25 metres from goal contributed to the 15 behinds we kicked across the game. Unfortunately, the inaccuracy eventually came back to haunt the team at the final siren.

Those boys who just missed selection in the 1st XVIII responded superbly with sound performances. Zac Carmichael, Ryan Erands, and Oliver Wentorf had plenty of the ball, as did GYC, which dominated the inside-50 stat in each quarter. This dominance in the midfield was thanks to the efforts of Blake Doyle, who threw himself into each ruck contest all day and followed up brilliantly with second and third efforts. Jacob Mapley also played a pivotal role in trying to get us over the line, as did skipper Nathan Shelverton, who tried hard to lift his team, but unfortunately it was not to be.

More composure with the ball and smarter football would have seen us with the win. The effort of all players was superb, but it was a disappointing end to a great season overall.

Cross Country Report

The Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country was once again held at Symmons Plains, providing an excellent venue for this exciting event. Last week, GYC was proudly represented by 10 enthusiastic students who competed with great determination in a highly competitive field.

A special congratulations to Luke Palmer and Nikolai Costa for their outstanding performances; Luke ran exceptionally well and claimed 1st place in the U20 category, while Nikolai secured an impressive 2nd place in the U18 division. Well done to all students for their effort and school spirit!

Other top 20 finishes were…. Lucas Pursell 12th (U18 Boys), Yakob Eldaleh 16th (U18 Boys), Sarah Heinze 5th (U18 Girls), Lily Belle 10th (U18 Girls).

Girls’ AFL — Round 5

GYC made it a perfect 5 from 5 to comfortably qualify for next week’s Southern Final with a resounding 83-point win over Fahan. Phoebe Lazenby was voted best on ground with her 3rd quarter being particularly sensational in helping GYC to regularly hit the scoreboard. Millie Richardson was also dominant up forward and both girls also chipped in with two 2 goals of their own. Matilda Kaye, Evie Bingham, Bree Wright and Caitlin Stevanovich all continued their recent run of hot form. Isabella Heroys, Eliza Garay, Amelia Milne and Lily McConnon were also amongst those who had an impact around the ground.
