Well-rounded Education at GYC

Our focus here at GYC is always on students achieving academic success in the many courses that we offer. It’s amazing to think we offer over 125 courses for students to select.

We place an extremely high level of importance on Teaching and Learning. Our explicit values of Growth, Connection, and Courage encompass all facets of College life and are also demonstrated in co-curricular activities. No doubt you are all aware of our outstanding DoSomething!@GYC program.

At various times during the academic year, we provide specialised sessions to students during the Extended Tutor weekly timeslot.

Offerings during these sessions include:

• Beyond GYC Career Awareness Sessions

• Prayer Services and Liturgies

• Information sessions for students including understanding TCE, VET & ATAR, and Academic Integrity & Extenuating Circumstances guidelines.

• Celebrations like Harmony Week, Reconciliation Week, Olympic Games, National Careers Week and NAIDOC Week

• Guest speakers from numerous organisations

• Academic, Community, and DoSomething!@GYC award assemblies.

Tasmanian Training Awards for Vocation Education and Training (VET)

The Tasmanian Training Awards celebrate outstanding performers in Vocational Education and Training were held last Friday evening. We had two current student finalists:

Abby Curtain – VET in Schools Student of the Year for her Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation course

William Upston – School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year for his Certificate III in Hospitality with Hungry Jacks

One of our College Alumni was also a finalist:

Hadi Rezaie - Trainee of the Year for his Certificate III in Dental Assisting through Work & Training hosted by Oral Health Tasmania, New Town.

Congratulations Michael Dobber!

GYC Teacher Michael Dobber has been announced as the recipient of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) Teacher Leadership Award! The award provides teachers with recognition for their excellent contribution to education in Tasmania. Essential criteria are:

• The improvement of student outcomes through exemplary teaching practice.

• A contribution to leading the professional learning of others.

• Building purposeful internal and external relationships.

We think Michael most certainly fulfils the requirements of these criteria!

90+ Day Empowers High-Achieving Year 10 Students

Last Friday, ten outstanding Year 10 students from Mount Carmel College and Sacred Heart College participated in the first-ever 90+ Day. This event was specifically designed to equip the most academically capable students with practical strategies and tips for excelling in college while fostering a space where like-minded high achievers could connect and build lasting friendships.

The day was facilitated by CET’s School Service Leader for Gifted/Extended Learning, Jacqueline Hardman, in collaboration with GYC’s Director of Pedagogy, Emma Puszkar. Guest presenters included GYC’s Dr. Demelza Hall and Nethmi Hewapathirana, who led engaging sessions that inspired and challenged the students.

Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with students expressing that the experience was both productive and enriching. Here are just a few of their reflections:

I found the sessions and the interactive activities very insightful, particularly when deciding how to advance my academic career. Moreover, this session provided me with some much-needed clarity regarding my college pathway.

I am so grateful to have had this opportunity today and I have learnt a lot that will aid me in College working towards a higher ATAR. The information (was) more personalised to suit us as well as allowing us to better connect with the other students.

I have been so grateful to have this opportunity today… I found it extremely helpful for an insight for next year with all the new information presented today. I as well found it helpful having another school joining us allowing us to bond with new people.

It was a fantastic day of learning, connection, and growth, and we look forward to seeing these students continue to shine in their academic journeys.

Visiting Relic of Blessed Carlo Acutis

The visiting relic of Blessed Carlo Acutis was a unique opportunity for our College community to learn about a Saint of the modern era who bridges that gap with young people. The life example of Blessed Carlo, his devotion to the ‘highway to Heaven’, and his commitment to serving others, is very relatable to young people today. Knowing that he was a coder made a tangible link to some students, while members of our Just Act group could relate to preparing food for soup kitchens and collecting clothing and warm blankets for those in need.

Students were intrigued by the concept of a relic and sainthood, and it sparked many conversations in Religious Education and Tutor groups. Some of our Studies of Religion 2 classes were lucky enough to listen to Fr Michele Remry and had the opportunity to ask inquisitive questions and gain a greater understanding of worship and veneration of a relic and its importance to the Catholic faith.

On a personal level being in the presence of the relic was a gateway of reverence and the Sacred in our busy lives. To take time to pray and reflect on the life of Blessed Carlo and of the young people in our community was a gift. As an educator of young adults it also gave me hope and confirmation that our communities of faith are indeed a place for young people, a welcoming hand ready to be received.

Our Theatre Performance class invite you their production of Arthur Miller’s iconic play The Crucible. Set in Massachusetts in 1692 during the Salem witch trials, The Crucible explores themes of blame, guilt and integrity which are just as relevant today.
