Focus Day – Year 12 Students

This week, Year 12 students are participating in a Focus Day on each campus. Glenorchy students on Tuesday 7 July and Hobart students on Wednesday 8 July. The program is being facilitated by an experienced educator, Dave Jorna from Project Hatch and focussing on the theme of Servant Leadership. Students will participate in various activities and explore the importance of a healthy mindset, surrounding themselves with the right people, and enabling others to believe in their own worth, value, and dignity. Attendance at Focus Day is an important component of the Graduating Expectations at Guilford Young College.

Course Selection – Year 11 Students

Over a two-day period, Tuesday 7 July and Wednesday 8 July, Year 11 students were provided with an opportunity to sit down with our teachers and make their all-important preliminary course selections for Year 12, 2027. Students made initial course selections during these one-on-one meetings and now have until Friday 24 July to enter these courses online. Students are strongly encouraged to seek as much information as possible about courses for next year, including viewing the course handbook, speaking with current Year 12 students and discussing options with current teachers.

Finally, this Friday brings to an end a very busy Term 2. We wish all students and their families a very peaceful and safe holiday period. We look forward to students returning on Tuesday 28 July for a very solid Term 3.

Course Advice Sessions 

As mentioned above, these ran yesterday and today for Year 11 students. Students are reminded to discuss plans for after college with your parents and guardians; there are a lot of considerations!

Once you have completed your consultation, you will be able to access the course enrolment webpage to lock in your place. Course selections must be entered by Friday July 24. Students will be emailed a confirmation of their allocated courses in late Term Three.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere at the moment; and it poses particular issues for schools. Guilford Young College is going through a period of discernment regarding the management of GenAI in education, and has recently sent out a student survey. If you haven’t already contributed your thoughts, please do – we genuinely want to hear from you! All responses are anonymous. Students, check your GYC email or CET Connect.

Term Break

We are now almost at the Term Break. Students, please be sure to take advantage of the downtime. Once we return for Term 3, it’s more or less a rocket right through to Term 4 and the TASC Examinations, so you will need your energy! Regular classes will recommence on Tuesday July 28.

Schools Recommendation Program

The University of Tasmania Schools Recommendation Program applications are open. By applying through this program you can secure an early offer of a place at University before finishing Year 12.

The application process has two steps.

1. Firstly, you need to complete the application form on the University website, preferencing up to five courses (Medicine and Paramedicine are not included).

2. Secondly, students must complete the GYC Schools Recommendation Program student form which will provide us with the relevant information to complete our recommendation. Copies of these forms can be collected from campus offices, The Davis Centre, The Director of Curriculum’s office, or from the Daily Notices on CET Connect. Your application with the University is not completed until you have submitted your GYC form to the Director of Curriculum on your home campus (Mrs Manners in Glenorchy, Mr Dobber in Hobart). You also need to submit a copy of your Year 11 TASC Statement of Results, which were emailed and mailed by TASC in December.

If you need help with your application, make an appointment with the Careers & Pathways Advisor. University of Tasmania representatives will be on both campuses for info sessions during the application process. Watch out for the advertised times and locations on socials. Round 1 closes on July 27.

NAIDOC Week

Last Sunday was ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday’ in the Catholic Church. Esther, Abbie, Ms Leeds and Mr Briers celebrated this special occasion with the St John’s Catholic parish in Glenorchy. Uncle Rodney led a Welcome to Country which included a smoking ceremony before Mass. Each year the Church acknowledges this day across the country which focuses on celebrating the faith, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This was a special way to begin NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Term Three Reports

Term Three reports will be released to students and parents in the first week of Term 3, with bookings opening for Parent Teacher Student Conferences this Friday.

As we head into the final term of course work, this is a valuable opportunity for parents and students to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress and how they can ensure they are finishing the year strongly. In the lead up to this, we encourage all parents to regularly log into CET Connect (our Learning Management System) to see recent results and to monitor upcoming and outstanding assessment tasks. Term 3 Trials

Congratulations to all students who trialled for 1st teams across Netball, Boys’ Soccer, Girls’ Soccer, Volleyball and Badminton over the past two weeks.

We have many talented sportspeople at GYC, and this was evident at the recent sports trials. It was great to see large numbers enrolling to join a team in Term 3 as part of their DoSomething!@GYC commitment. Please remember to honour your commitment to the team you will be allocated to by ensuring your availability.

Swimming

We need more swimmers. If you have represented your school previously, please help us fill a team. We are currently short of swimmers for male events but could do with some additional females too. If you are yet to make a DoSomething!@GYC commitment, then perhaps swimming could help! Let us know if you are interested.

Cross Country

The SSATIS Cross Country will be held on Thursday in the first week back in Term 3 at the Domain.
