From the Deputy Principal

College Life

Through our words and actions, I hope you are all aware that, underpinned by love and respect, we value growth, connection and courage at Guilford Young College. Living up to these values is part of our Lux Nostra Graduating Expectations and students have been working hard to meet these. We look forward to farewelling all our Year 12 students at the graduation ceremony next term and celebrating their achievements.

As part of valuing individual growth, students are asked to participate in one of the many DoSomething!@GYC opportunities at the College. We have a proud sporting tradition, and it is fabulous to see so many of our students involved in sports, ranging from social rosters through to competing in State Finals. However, there are so many opportunities beyond sport - our fabulous College Musical last week; students involved in the Vinnies Winter Appeal; or the Philosothon, to name but a few.

It brings the staff of the College much joy to see the growth of our students as they participate in one of the many opportunities outside of the classroom. I am confident that the students I teach will remember their involvement in the DoSomething!@GYC program long after they have forgotten the lessons in my classroom.

Term 2 Sport

It has been a busy and exciting start to Term 3 Sport. GYC has 33 teams participating in swimming, soccer, badminton, boys’ volleyball and girls’ netball.

After school, the College is buzzing with activity as students represent GYC with pride and enthusiasm. It is fantastic to see so many students getting involved, supporting their teammates and embracing the opportunities that school sport provides.

Last Friday evening, we held the combined GYC/SVC/MCC/SMC/Dominic Swimming Carnival, where students competed for the opportunity to be selected in the College Swimming Team. Congratulations to all students who participated and gave their best.

We look forward to supporting our swimmers as they prepare to compete in the upcoming Southern and State SATIS Swimming Carnivals. You can download all the latest sport scores.

SATIS Representative Day

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Southern SATIS (SSATIS) Representative Teams! The SSATIS Representative Tournament brings together some of the best school athletes from across Southern Tasmania, providing students with a fantastic opportunity to gain representative experience and compete alongside students from other schools.

Sports include soccer, boys’ basketball and girls’ basketball.

Boys’ 1st Soccer Gold, Girls’ 1st Soccer Gold, Boys’ 1st Basketball, and Girls’ 1st Basketball players have all been emailed – please check!

Trials & Selection

Soccer & Boys Basketball

Friday 21 August – 4.00pm – 5.30pm
Friday 28 August – 4.00pm – 5.30pm
Soccer: Bell Street Grounds
Boys’ basketball: Hutchins – NJ Edwards Hub
Students will be notified by email if they progress to the second trial.

Girls’ Basketball

No trials will be held. The team will be selected in consultation with relevant delegates, managers and the coach.
Interested GYC students should contact Miss Banks by Thursday 20 August to be considered.

Representative Tournament

Friday 4 September 2026 at Launceston Church Grammar School, Launceston. Transport will be provided, and students selected in the representative teams will receive a uniform and lunch on the day.

Nominations/expressions of interest close Thursday 20 August 2026.

Students interested in Soccer or Boys’ Basketball must complete the Southern SATIS Rep Team Player Nomination Form by the closing date. Girls’ Basketball students should contact Mrs Brown or Miss Banks directly to express their interest.

Book Launch - Craig Deayton

You’re invited to previous GYC principal Craig Deayton's book launch at the Don Bosco Creative Arts Centre on Friday 21 August at 6.00 pm.

Craig will be providing drinks and nibbles, along with a few short speeches about the book and Tasmania's place in this important piece of history.
