The Guilford Young College name

When students graduate from Guilford Young College they take the reputation of the College with them – its name. Students can proudly put on their resumé that they were a student at the College. This carries with it the values of the school - Growth, Connection and Courage, underpinned with Love and Respect. Students can use this good name to secure employment, commence an apprenticeship or study at universities with essay-based applications.

One of the ways we maintain the name of the College is through the way students present themselves in the local community. Every time they wear the uniform with pride, demonstrate fair play on the field, or give up their seat on public transport for someone who is in need, the name of the College is strengthened.

Members of the wider community give us regular feedback when our students do not live up to the values of the College. When students leave rubbish in the streets surrounding our campuses, when they engage in unsporting behaviour, and when they drive and park without consideration for others they impact on the name of the College. Last week we wrote to you about some of these behaviours and the impact these have. We also spoke directly to the students who were not wearing the correct uniform, specifically trackpants which more closely resemble blue pyjama pants.

We have made a temporary exemption to our track pants while we review our sport uniform. If the College track pants are not available in an appropriate size or they fit poorly, students may wear cuffed plain navy blue track pants. Students who continue to wear non-College uniform will bear consequences as stated in our Student Code of Conduct outlined in the 2026 Student Guide.

Catholic Education Careers Expo

Year 11 students will be attending the 2026 Catholic Education Careers Expo on Tuesday 19 May at the MAC 02 Event Centre in Hobart.

Organised by Catholic Education Tasmania, this event features over 50 exhibitors from a wide range of industries, training providers, and tertiary institutions. It offers students a valuable opportunity to explore future career and study options, engage with industry professionals, and gather practical information to support their post-school planning.

Students will be bussed to and from the Careers Expo between 9.00am -10.45am and are reminded to wear formal uniform for the event.

Rugby Union

This year, SATIS with the support from Play Rugby (Rugby Australia), the Tasmania Rugby Union are offering a new sport – Rugby starting this Friday at the University Rugby Oval in Sandy Bay. There will be two options available, based on each player’s experience. There will be Tri Tag and contact rugby options. Through this program, SATIS is aiming to offer rugby to both beginners and experienced players.

Coaches will be available to introduce the game, developing and advancing rugby skills. SATIS schools, including GYC, are very fortunate to receive a Rugby Starter Kit valued at $1500 through the Future Legacy Rugby Fund which will help GYC students learn and develop rugby skills. The program starts this Friday at 6.30pm – 7.30pm at UTAS Rugby Oval,

Girls’ Basketball – State Final

The State SATIS Basketball Senior Girls’ Basketball shield is heading back to the south after GYC’s outstanding 66–46 victory over Launceston Church Grammar School in an electric State Final!

Played in front of a packed crowd, the team delivered an impressive performance from start to finish. Captain Isobel Geard led by example, with fantastic support from fellow Year 12 players Alinta, Hayley and Eva.

Coached by Kathy Foster, the team showed composure, determination and true teamwork throughout the game. A huge congratulations to all involved on an incredible achievement!

Boys’ Basketball – State Final

GYC travelled to Launceston on Thursday to defend the SATIS Shield in a hard-fought clash against St Patrick’s College. In front of a loud home crowd, the boys played exciting basketball against a tough opponent.

After trailing by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, Lucas Norman silenced the St Patrick’s crowd with a barrage of three-pointers to bring GYC back within three points early in the final quarter. However, it was not enough to get over the line, with missed free throws proving costly as St Patrick’s College claimed a 69–64 victory.

Lucas Norman, Hamish van de Kamp, and Tyler Dingjan were standout players for GYC on the day, while the entire team displayed great effort, resilience, and spirit throughout the match.

GYC would also like to thank Chris Symons for stepping in to coach the boys during the State Final at late notice, as well as Izach Collins for coaching the team throughout the roster season.
