The Guilford Young College name

When students graduate from Guilford Young College they take the reputation of the College with them – its name. Students can proudly put on their resumé that they were a student at the College. This carries with it the values of the school - Growth, Connection and Courage, underpinned with Love and Respect. Students can use this good name to secure employment, commence an apprenticeship or study at universities with essay-based applications.

One of the ways we maintain the name of the College is through the way students present themselves to our local communities. Every time they wear the uniform with pride, demonstrate fair play on the field, or give up their seat on public transport for someone who is in need, the name of the College is strengthened.

Members of the wider community give us regular feedback when our students do not live up to the values of the College. When students leave rubbish in the streets surrounding our campuses, when they engage in unsporting behaviour, and when they drive and park without consideration for others, they impact on the name of the College. This week, I am writing to students to remind them specifically of the consequences of these behaviours.

2. Consistency of records and data meaning we’re better able to assist students, parents and carers.

Catholic Education Careers Expo

Year 11 students will be attending the 2025 Catholic Education Careers Expo on Thursday, 22 May at the MAC 02 Event Centre in Hobart.

Organised by Catholic Education Tasmania, this event features over 50 exhibitors from a wide range of industries, training providers, and tertiary institutions. It offers students a valuable opportunity to explore future career and study options, engage with industry professionals, and gather practical information to support their post-school planning.

Opportunities for the Hydro Tasmania Work exposure program are still available. Please contact our Careers and Pathways Advisor if you are interested.

This Monday the College will be holding a professional photoshoot on both the Hobart and Glenorchy campuses.

These photos will be used in the marketing of the College now and into the future. We’ll be looking for students to photograph on the day particularly those in Formal Uniform.

On this day, in accordance with the College policy for formal events, girls are encouraged to wear navy blue stockings under their formal uniform skirts. Boys are encouraged to wear the GYC tie. A reminder that hooded tops are not permitted to be worn under the Guilford Young College uniform.

Basketball State Final Boys

The first week of the term was very exciting with the Basketball State Finals and all three of the College Football Teams and the two Water Polo Teams playing. The Boys Basketball played extremely well dominating the game against Grammar from the start with a three pointer from Will Christie and two dunks from Jasper Hay. The GYC Team played hard to the end with some excellent teamwork securing them a place at the National Championship later in the Year.

Basketball State Final Girls

The Girls Team after having a very easy Southern SATIS roster were keen to go back-to-back premiers. St Brendan Shaw College had their own agenda and decided it was their turn this year. The GYC Team played with determination but were unable to match the skill of the northern team.

Congratulations – State representation

Netball - Alet Le Grange (U16) and Matilda Kaye (U18) recently represented Tasmania at the National Netball Championships held in Sydney. 

Basketball - Eva Schulze on her recent trip to Brisbane where she represented the state in the U18 Girls Basketball team – she was also named as Vice-Captain. Well done also to Isobel Geard & Alinta Wilson who were also selected as reserves for the team.

Clay Target Shooting - Jake Glover represented Tasmania in the Junior Division during April at the National Clay Target Carnival, Western Australia 

Rowing - Zoe Smith and Abbie Smith (GYC) are competing in the schoolgirls double for GYC and under Tasmanian University Boat Club.

Talent for 2032 program - This month the TIS will be conducting a series of testing days in Hobart, Launceston & Penguin, involving junior athletes aged between 12 and 22, with the aim of finding Tasmania’s next young sporting stars in anticipation of the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
