One of the great joys of being an educator here at GYC is following the careers of students after they have graduated and make contributions to society in so many different areas.

The Olympics recently commenced in Paris and it’s timely to acknowledge the three former GYC students that are competing and representing our country with distinction:

Maddison Brooks (Leavers 2022) Hockey - Maddison was a highly motivated student achieving excellence in her studies and represented the College in both hockey and cricket at a very high level.

Max Giuliani (Leavers 2021) Swimming - I recall Max completing in State SATIS swimming competitions for us. Max won a bronze medal last night in the 4 x 200M freestyle relay and came 7th in the 200M individual freestyle final.

Jacob Despard (Leavers 2015) 4 x 100M Relay Team - Jacob was part of our famous GYC 4 x 100M relay team in 2015 that featured another sprinting star Jack Hale. We boldly declared GYC was the fastest school in the country on the front page of the Mercury newspaper.

While on the subject of our Alumni making an impact, I recently had the pleasure of attending the prestigious 2024 Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards. We had number of former students nominated in a variety of categories.

Motors Tasmania Sports Award
Felicity Wilson-Haffenden (Leavers 2023) at just 18, emerged as the Junior Time Trial World Champion and clinched three national and Oceania titles in 2023. Her swift rise in cycling showcases her talent and determination.
Maddison Brooks (Leavers 2022) is a rising star in hockey, debuted for the Hockeyroos in February 2023 and has since represented Australia in numerous international tournaments, scoring four goals in 25 matches.

TADPAC Print Service to the Disability Sector Award
Nicole McKillop (Leavers 2015) has made significant contributions to the disability sector through both paid employment and volunteering roles.

Heather & Christopher Chong Community Service & Volunteering Award
Emily Gamez (Leavers 2023) continues to dedicate her time and energy to volunteering with organisations in the northern suburbs of Hobart.

Uniform changes for 2025

Families should now be aware of changes coming to the GYC school Uniform. From Term 1 2025 the College formal uniform will be the default uniform for all students at Guilford Young College.

This means that the Sport uniform is only required or worn on the day of a timetabled Health and Physical Education course or where there is a specific course requirement. For many of our families this will require the purchase of one uniform rather than two.

The Hobart Sport Leaders ran a successful Volleyball Competition during lunchtimes at the Hobart. The games were played in good spirit with fun and enthusiasm.
