Our focus here at GYC is always on students achieving academic success in the many courses that we offer. It’s amazing to think that we offer over 125 courses from which students can make their selections.

We place an extremely high level of importance on Teaching and Learning. Our explicit values of Growth, Connection, and Courage encompass all facets of college life and are also demonstrated in co-curricular activities. No doubt you are all aware of our outstanding DoSomething!@GYC program.

This term, there are 386 students involved in 32 sporting teams representing GYC:

• 129 students playing Netball

• 92 Badminton players

• 34 Girls’ Soccer players

• 78 Boys’ Soccer players

• 41 Boys’ Volleyballer

• 12 Swimmers

In addition, students also have the opportunity to participate in the following DoSomething activities: Clubs & Societies, Global Awareness & Languages Society, Big Ideas: History, Art & Politics, Philosothon, Ethics Olympiad, STEM Club, Chess Club, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Debating, Robotics & Gaming, In-House Writing Competitions, Running Club, Book Club, UN Youth/UN Parliament, Rock Climbing & Bouldering, ABC Heywire Storytelling, Dance Club, Life Drawing, Theatre Appreciation Society and The Craft Collective.

Recently, thirty-two students and four staff members returned from a Ski Trip at Mount Hotham. It was another highly successful trip, with every student learning to ski or snowboard during the five-day snow experience.

Later this term, twenty-one students and four staff members are off to France, departing September 30 and returning October 12. We wish them Bon Voyage!

And of course, our famous Musical Mary Poppins opens next week involving thirty-five highly dedicated Years 11 and 12 student cast members and an additional fifteen students assisting backstage.

I hope you agree that we offer a wonderfully well-rounded education at GYC.

The Davis Centre houses all the resources and support in the heart of the College on the Hobart and Glenorchy campuses. It is named after GYC’s first Principal, Sister Pamela Davis OP.

Swimming

We still need more swimmers. Trials are THIS FRIDAY! If you have represented your school previously, please help us fill a team. We are currently short in swimmers for male events but could do with some additional females too. If you are yet to make a DoSomething!@GYC commitment, then perhaps swimming could help with your decision making!

Southern SATIS Cross Country

Seventeen students represented the College at the Southern SATIS Cross Country event on Friday. The girls were first to compete in the 4km race, with Erin Mulcahy leading the team home in an impressive 12th place, closely followed by Anna Clingeleffer.

In the boys' 6 km race, Nikolai Middendorp-Costa delivered an exceptional performance, crossing the finish line in a remarkable 19:58 to claim first place by an impressive 40-second margin. Brodie McIntyre also ran strongly to finish 6th in 22:40, followed by Isaac Dixon in 8th, Yakob Eldaleh in 11th, and Lucas Pursell in 14th.

It was an outstanding day overall, with the boys taking home the Senior Boys Shield and the team finishing as runners-up in the Senior Co-educational Shield. Congratulations to all competitors on their efforts.

Ski Trip

Thirty-two students and four staff (Mr Jacobs, Mr Kelly, Mrs Stephenson and Mrs Brown) attended the 2026 GYC Ski Trip to Mount Hotham during the first week of Term 3. It was another highly successful trip, with every student learning to ski or snowboard during the five-day snow experience.

Each morning began with a 1.5-hour lesson led by qualified instructors, before students spent the rest of the day putting their new skills into practice. With up to nine hours on the snow each day, the progress made over the course of the week was outstanding.

The weather was favourable, with fresh snow falling on Tuesday evening, making Wednesday the best day of the season. Students also had the exciting opportunity to experience night skiing on Wednesday evening.

Students enjoyed making the most of the lodge facilities, including table tennis, eight-ball, board games, and helping with meal preparation and other shared responsibilities. As part of the trip, students also had the opportunity to complete the requirements for the Outdoor Experiences A course through their participation and accompanying coursework.

Many students finished the week already looking forward to planning their next ski holiday and returning to the GYC Ski Trip next year.

Water Polo

The College's two water polo teams—the Boys’ GYC/SVC Combined Team and the Girls’ GYC Team—both enjoyed successful seasons, with each team qualifying for the finals.

The Boys’ Team, coached by GYC parent Dwayne Cosker, finished second on the ladder before taking on the strong Hobart College Combined Team in the finals. Throughout the season, the commitment, skill, and teamwork displayed by the GYC and SVC students were outstanding, contributing to an enjoyable and rewarding campaign.

The Girls’ Team, coached by GYC teacher Mr Ramon Jacobs, competed in the 3rd vs 4th playoff against another strong Hobart College combined team. The girls showed great determination and passion throughout the season, steadily improving their skills each week while demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and teamwork.

Unfortunately, the GYC Teams were unable to come away with the silver overall. Both teams represented the College with pride.

• College Basketball Competitive, USA – Lucas Norman, Hamish van de Kamp and Connor Byers.

• Australian Gymnastics Championships – Emily Whelan recently finished 6th in Australia for Level 7 Tumbling.

Congratulations GYC Alumni

• Felicity Wilson-Haffenden – Winning Gold in the Women's Team Pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, setting a new Games record of 4:10.658.

• Bailey Van Den Broek – Australian track and field athlete specialising in the heptathlon and multi-events, representing Australia at the World Athletics U20 Championships and signed to the University of Missouri.
