The Hall of Achievement

I write to you all about an exciting initiative we are embracing and that is the establishment of a Hall of Achievement. What a powerful way to build pride, connection, and aspiration within our community. We are passionate about celebrating success in all its forms; we do this every day with our current students and staff, but we can also do this by celebrating extraordinary Alumni. The Hall of Achievement is an initiative which will recognise former students who have made outstanding contributions in their fields, in their communities, and beyond.

We will honour excellence while inspiring our current students to see what is possible beyond the gates of GYC. People connect through stories – these are so important to us - from our Engineers, Human Rights advocates, Performing and Visual Artists, those in the Medical profession, those who lead through service, our Olympians, and all those in between, immersed in innovation, entrepreneurship and professional achievement.

Our Hall of Achievement will be more than recognition; it will be a source of inspiration, and you never know – there may be new pathways and possibilities for our students, on the horizon, energised by persistence and passion.

Watch this space! More information will be forthcoming around how to nominate a former student who has achieved great things, and who might potentially be the College’s first Hall of Achievement inductee.

The GYC Senior Secondary Expo is a college-wide event on Thursday 4 June at the Glenorchy Campus Theatre. No classes will be held on this day and Year 12 students are not required to attend. 

The Expo offers an invaluable opportunity for students to discuss courses and career pathways with teachers, assisting them to select the most appropriate courses for Year 12, 2027.  

All Year 11 students are expected to attend the Expo at any time between 10.30am – 3.00pm. The amount of time students spend at the Expo will vary depending on their needs, but it is suggested that students aim to spend 45-60 minutes discussing courses with teachers. Students will be required to sign in on arrival.  

Students are required to make their own transport arrangements to Glenorchy campus and may wear free dress. 

Parents and prospective students are also very welcome to attend the Expo in the evening any time between 6.00pm – 7.00pm with a presentation being given at 5.30pm.

Please note that current Year 11 students will be required to select their Year 12 courses for 2027 by Friday 24 July.  

We also take this opportunity to remind parents that Friday 5 June is a student-free day, as teachers will be participating in State-Wide Moderation of courses to ensure ongoing high-quality teaching and assessment. Monday 8 June is the King’s Birthday Public Holiday and as such, the College will be closed.

GYC has previously welcomed international exchange students through Students of the World, a registered high school exchange organisation, and we’ve seen the positive impact these experiences have on our community.

They are urgently seeking local families to host students arriving in July this year from Spain, Germany, France, and Italy who will attend school and become part of family life during their time in Australia. Host families receive a financial contribution to assist with everyday costs.

Coaches For Term 3 Sports

We require Netball and Soccer coaches for Term 3. If you have experience in either sports, and wish to help your son or daughter’s team, or your brother or sister’s team or you are a past GYC student wanting to become involved in coaching a team, please email our Sport Coordinator.

Boys’ Hockey

The College is still looking for additional players for the Boys’ Hockey Team this term. The boys play on Thursdays at 4.15pm, with all games held at the Hockey Centre in New Town. Players only require a mouthguard, as all other equipment can be provided.

The team has made an impressive start to the season, defeating both the Combined Colleges and Hutchins teams. However, we do need more players if this success is to continue.

Cruze Gray and Alistair Stebbings are a joy to watch with their impressive passing and their ability to always know where each other is on the field. Archie Sansom has transitioned his soccer goalkeeping skills to hockey with ease and has already made some outstanding saves.

Jack Byrne’s work rate across the field, linking the defence with the attack, has been constant and consistent, and he can always be relied upon. Kodie Kamerick boosted the team’s numbers last week and played extremely well for a first-time player, making several effective contributions.

Girls’ Football Report

GYC has had a range of results in the qualifying rounds of the Girls AFL season. After winning by forfeit in Round 1, the girls had a nail-biting one-point loss to Fahan.

Despite the unavailability of the Devil’s players, GYC was not short of girls to step up, some for the first time in an official competition. A dominant display from Casey Bumford both in the ruck and around the ground made her a standout best on ground. There were also significant contributions from Amber Bumord, Melody Calderon, Lizzie Thompson and Isabella Heroys. Alet le Grange had an inspirational last quarter and nearly lifted the girls over the line, only to have GYC’s attempt at victory thwarted by an unlucky ‘poster’ from Casey in the dying moments.

This was followed by a terrific performance against Collegiate, winning by 46 points. The inclusion of Mia Anderson had immediate impact. She was clearly the best on ground, having numerous clearances and plenty of effective touches, teaming well with Casey Bumford who was again dominant in the ruck. Emma Christie, Rose Kenna, Amber Bumford and Maddie Donaghy were amongst many that had positive contributions in all four quarters.

Surfing

The 2026 Red Herring Tasmanian Schools Surfing Championships, presented by Surfing Tasmania, were held at Clifton Beach on Monday 25 May.

Poppy Woodberry from GYC competed in both the U19 Girls’ Individual and MR Shield events. Poppy recorded the highest-scoring wave in her age group across the entire day. In a closely contested competition, she finished third in both the Individual and MR Shield events.
