Community
I have returned from a brief period of Long Service Leave and have reflected on the few short weeks since the start of Term 3. What strikes me is the notion of community and how GYC embraces this so wholeheartedly. Whilst academic and vocational studies are our core business, the sense of belonging, connection and shared purpose among students and staff, is inspiring.
I strongly believe that a successful college such as GYC, thrives because of the community we create and sustain. It is no surprise that students learn best when they feel connected and a community such as ours encourages participation and collaboration and for many, it improves mental health and reduces feelings of isolation. We know that GYC is more than just a place to learn, and we all have a role to play in creating a positive environment where we celebrate achievement and uphold our values; it is a shared responsibility.
In the five weeks since Term 3 began, community has featured widely, through our Year 12 Retreat program, “Mary Poppins”, NAIDOC week celebrations, English Writing Forum, our Home Room Cup, Vinnie’s PJ day, DoSomething!@GYC and even though you may not think so – our Parent Student Teacher Conferences which bring staff, students and families together in one common purpose.
Community is the foundation of GYC. We proudly foster strong relationships, encourage collaboration and work hard to empower every member to succeed. The second half of Term 3 will have no shortage of enriching community-based initiatives in which to become involved, and as we head towards the pointy end of the year, I wish all students a productive, challenging and rewarding time.
