From the Deputy Principal

National Science Week 2024

At Guilford Young College, one of our core values is Connection. We strongly encourage our students to form meaningful connections within the school community to enhance their experience at the College. However, this invitation does not stop within our school community; it challenges our students to make connections to all of creation. As the custodians of the planet for all future generations, our will continually face choices that will shape a more sustainable future.

The theme of Science Week for 2024 is Species Survival – More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival of different species in an ever-changing world.

In support of this theme, staff and students from the College had the privilege of joining Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, the Governor of Tasmania, to gain insights from prominent Tasmanian scientists on how we can collectively ensure a prosperous future for all species. The key message of Science Week, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Laudato si' is that we are all part of an interconnected web of life.

Changes for 2025

Year Level Coordinators

Along with changes to the College uniform our existing House system (Bosco, Guzman, and Tenison in Hobart and Carmel, MacKillop and Rice in Glenorchy) will be replaced by Year Level Coordinators. There will be two Year Level Coordinators on each GYC campus.

Home Room

The College will also be moving to Home Rooms instead of Tutor Groups. No change to the structure, just a name change which will bring more relevance and context to the space. Each Home Room will have a Home Room representative and this will provide students with further opportunities for leadership.

Student Leadership

With the move to Year Levels, it seemed the right time to review our student leadership process. More information will be coming soon but the aim is to have smaller, more targeted campus leadership groups.

We're looking for a local allied health professional to deliver a scenario/role play for our Certificate 3 Allied Health students as part of their course. If you can assist please contact Michelle Cassar-Smith or the College office.

It's the last week of the annual St Vincent de Paul Winter Woollies Appeal!

Hobart campus is collecting non perishable food items, as part of an inter house competition. Glenorchy Campus is collecting blankets, scarfs, sleeping bags, warm clothes, and hygiene products.

Any donations and items can be dropped off in the front office in Hobart or Glenorchy.

Recess Monday 2 September

Ms Cooper is doing the big chop to and will donate 35cm of her hair to Variety Hair with Heart. The chop is In memory of her Mum, Julie Cooper and will commemorate 10 years since her passing.

Sport

SATIS Intrastate Tournament

This year, SATIS are organising an Intrastate Tournament on Friday 6 September at St Patrick’s College, Launceston. Students from various Southern SATIS schools will nominate to be selected in a Southern SATIS Team. The SSATIS Team will then play against a NSATIS Team in Girls and Boys Basketball and Soccer. To be eligible, students must have or are going to represent their school and in their nominated sport.

Soccer Training: Friday 16 August at 4.00pm - 5.30pm
Basketball Training: Friday 16 August at Swisherr 4.00pm - 5.30pm

Sport is extremely popular at the Guilford Young College, the Sport Coordinators always aim to provide coaches at the highest standard. We are extremely grateful for the following parents and past students for coaching various GYC Soccer, Volleyball and Netball Teams during Term 2:

Charlotte Barnes – Representing Tasmania Thunder in the U18 Girls National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour, held from the 25 - 28 September.
Daniel Moody - Recently represented Tasmania Melbourne in a Badminton Tournament

Inter House Volleyball and Netball (Hobart Campus)

The Hobart Sport Leaders ran a successful Volleyball Competition during lunchtimes at the Hobart. The games were played in good spirit with fun and enthusiasm. A well organised Bosco House were the leaders of the competition. This term the Sport Leaders are planning to run a Netball Competition.
