Mid-Year Exams

Today, many of our students are beginning their Mid-Year Exams. There is a mix of anticipation and nervousness among these students. Regardless of how well-prepared the students are, they will inevitably be in a frenzy the night before the exam as they flip through their notes.

Below is a letter on exams, attributed to a principal from Singapore in 2022. The sentiment of this letter is beautiful and a timely reminder around reducing exam anxiety.

There is also a lesson for students who have prepared quotes in their exams. I did some quick research on this letter from 2022 – various versions of this letter have circulated on the internet since 2014 and various schools have published it as their own.

Students, make sure your quotes are from credible sources!

Absences

All Absences must now all be reported via the Parent Access Module (PAM). Links to this can also be found under the “Community” tab.

Parents and carers who don't have access should contact us to obtain access.

Exam Reminders

Exams run from Wednesday 19 June until Wednesday 26 June

Make sure you arrive at least 20 minutes early
No phones, smart watches or bags permitted.
For those with Reasonable Adjustments, the extra time is added at the start of the exam, so make sure you know what time you need to arrive.
If students are unwell on the day of the exam, their parent or guardian must notify the office on the morning of the exam, and need to have their doctor complete the medical certificate in the Midyear Examination Information booklet. Extra copies can be obtained from the campus offices.

TASC Reasonable Adjustments

Applications need to be submitted to us before the TASC deadline of
July 5.

We’ve launched a new Facebook Group the GYC Marketplace. This will be a place to buy swap and sell all things related to GYC.

We’re hoping this can be a helpful place for parents and carers into the future particularly for obtaining secondhand Uniform. This site will be strictly for GYC related items only and posts that don’t fit this criteria will be promptly removed.

Joining is easy and anyone can join. You’ll need to answer a couple of security questions first.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Push-Up Challenge so far!

Hobart Campus raised a total of $836 and Glenorchy a huge $2133.

The Push-Up Challenge is all about the push for better mental health. At GYC we want to support the health of our participants, raise mental health awareness and contribute to interventions and prevention for depression, anxiety and suicide.

Davis Centre Opening

Last Thursday night we held the opening of our Davis Centre on the Hobart campus by His Grace, Archbishop Julian Porteous. The Davis Centre (previously known as the ARC) unifies student resources into a singular learning hub that connects, resources and supports students, staff and the wider community. The building houses the IT helpdesk, pastoral care, counselling, careers and traditional library resources and social learning spaces.

The Centre is named after Sister Pamela Davis OP the first Principal of Guilford Young College. Her desire was to not just share values and experiences with students, but also to listen to the views of their world as they built a future. We trust this is a lasting legacy that all students at GYC will get to experience.

Sport

Congratulations!

GYC Alumni (2021) and former College Swimming Captain, Max Giuliani who has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. He swam an amazing race finishing strongly to win the 200m Freestyle at the 2024 Australian Swimming Trials.

All Schools Cross Country

Last week, Mrs Mel Brown and the GYC runners went to Symmons Plains to participate in the Tasmanian Secondary All Schools Cross Country. They had a brilliant day out on the track, showcasing their talent with some awesome results. Avalon Forbes ran exceptionally well taking out the U20 race and qualified for the Nationals. Congratulations to the following students for their participation and achievements:

Boys U20: Henry Diggle (5th), Noah Thomas (17th), James Fullarton (20th), Ben George (29th)
Girls U20: Avalon Forbes (1st)
Girls U18: Taylah Bernes (10th)

Boys and Girls Football

Last week the Girls 1st and Boys 2nd Football Teams played a double-header to secure their places in the upcoming SATIS Grand Finals. The Girls 1st team had a brilliant game and made a big statement, winning 84 to 0 against Scotch Oakburn in the State-wide Semi-Final. The Boys 2nd team played off against Hutchins in the SSATIS Grand Final. It was a highly contested game and an absolute thriller, with GYC winning by 3 points! It is the first time for GYC to make all three State Finals in Football. This is an outstanding achievement by all players and the coaching staff, Mr Mark Beck, Mr Blair Brownless, Mr Peter Di Venuto, Mr Michael Gowans, Mr John Covington, Mr Ollie Kelly and Miss Mackenzie Banks.

SATIS Intrastate Tournament

This year, SATIS are organising an Intrastate Tournament on Friday 6 September at St Patrick’s College, Launceston. Students from various Southern SATIS schools will nominate to be selected in a Southern SATIS Team. The SSATIS Team will then play against a NSATIS Team in Girls and Boys Basketball and Soccer. To be eligible, students must have or are going to represent their school and in their nominated sport.

Mae Riley-Smith (Year 11) has qualified for the School Nationals diving competition which will be held in Adelaide in August.

Abbey Geappen and Matilda Kaye travelled to Melbourne to participate in the ‘Vic Wild Camp’ with the Tasmanian Wild Netball Squad.

Oliver Stebbings, Oscar Lucas, Ben Sargent, Noah Thomas, Rhys Wilkinson will be representing the State in the U18 Tasmanian Hockey Team at the Gold Coast in July.
