Term 2 reflections

As Term 2 draws to a close, I reflect on how we seem to slip from Autumn to Winter in no time at all. We launched ourselves into this decidedly chilly season with our highly successful Expo and before we knew it, students were immersed in their mid-year exams. For some, this may have been their first formal exam experience. Not all results will be positive but setbacks are a natural part of learning and growth. This exam period has been timely preparation for students as they begin to work towards fulfilling the requirements of final assessments and external exams, in November.

Throughout this next phase, our teachers, Tutors, Learning Support Officers, Heads of House and Counsellors remain thoroughly committed to providing the care, guidance and scaffolding that students may need. As we prepare to break for the term, I want to express my gratitude to our staff whose passion for and commitment to all they do, remain steadfast. I encourage all students to make the most of the upcoming break by resting, rejuvenating and preparing for the challenges and opportunities that await us in Term 3.

To all parents and guardians, thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s education journey.

This program allows Australian Year 12 students to apply for University courses based on their school’s recommendation rather than solely on their ATAR. Students are eligible to apply for up to five courses, excluding Medicine, Paramedicine and Medical Radiation Science. Application and Offer rounds are as follows:

• First Round: 27 June - 29 of July

• Second Round: 29 July - 5 September

• Final Round: 5 September - 4 October

Missed Out on Your Dream Course? If you don’t get an offer for your top choice through the Schools Recommendation Program, don't worry! You will be re-assessed for a higher preference offer once your ATAR is released.

Offer Timeline - Offers will be released from August through to the end of October, helping to reduce the pressure during your final year.

Revised Year 12 Formal Date

Recently, we were made aware that our date for the Year 12 Formal (29 November) was no longer available.We were offered an alternative date of 6 December but this has brought with it, some difficulties.

After negotiations with the venue, we can confirm the date for the Year 12 Formal is Wednesday 27 November 6.00pm - 10.00pm. Students will receive further details about the Formal early in Term 3.

Graduation Ceremonies

The Graduation Ceremonies this year will take place on the following dates; both ceremonies will be held in the theatre at the Glenorchy campus.

• Monday 25 November - Hobart Graduation

• Tuesday 26 November - Glenorchy Graduation

Student Success - University of Tasmania Connections Program

Congratulations to Year 11 student Toby who has completed two university subjects through the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and the University of Tasmania Connections Program.

Toby was one of 24 successful students to be selected from a national field of 430 applicants and spent his holidays on Maria Island. Toby worked as part of a team to deliver a presentation on the presence of a fish called the Mado Sweep and how, based on the data collected, their abundance correlated with marine heatwaves.

Student Success - French Language Competition

Congratulations also to Year 12 student Salomé who won first prize for her recitation of the French poem Lordre du jour de floréal by Victor Hugo at the Alliance Française state-wide French Language Competition.

Salome also came first in the Conversation and equal first in the Listening. What an outstanding effort! Félicitations!

Term 3 Sport Trials and Selection of Teams

After a busy Term 2 with cross country, football, hockey, and water polo, it will be an exciting Term 3 with the following number of teams entered in either Southern SATIS or association sporting rosters: 5 boys soccer teams, 9 girls netball teams, 2 boys volleyball teams, 3 girls soccer teams and 11 badminton teams.

Team selection dates for Division 1 Teams:

• Boys Soccer: Monday 17 June, 1 July and 22 July – 3:40pm at GYC Hobart

• Badminton: Monday 1 July - Glenorchy Campus Gym at 3:30pm

• Netball: Tuesday 2 July at GYC Glen 3:40pm and Monday 22 July at GYC Glenorchy

• Boys Volleyball: Thursday 4 July (Glenorchy Campus) at 3:45pm

• Girls Soccer: Thursday 25 July (Hobart Campus) - Training

SATIS Intrastate Tournament

This year, SATIS are organising an Intrastate Tournament on Friday 6 September at St Patrick’s College, Launceston. Students from various Southern SATIS schools will nominate to be selected in a Southern SATIS Team. The SSATIS Team will then play against a NSATIS Team in Girls and Boys Basketball and Soccer. To be eligible, students must have or are going to represent their school and in their nominated sport.

Boys and Girls 1st Football Teams

Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic effort in the State Finals unfortunately both falling short in close games to St Patricks College.
