From Reflection to Renewal

As Lent nears its end, we find ourselves on the threshold of Easter – a time of profound hope, celebration, and new beginnings.

These final days of the Lenten journey invite us to reflect more deeply on the path we’ve walked. For many, Lent has been a season of quiet transformation. Through giving something up or taking something on, we’ve tried to realign our lives with the values that matter most – compassion, humility, generosity and faith. As Holy Week approaches and Easter draws near, we prepare to celebrate the heart of our faith, the promise that light overcomes darkness, and that love never fails. Easter is not just a date on the calendar; it is a call to live differently, to embrace hope and to carry the joy of the Resurrection into our daily lives.

As a college community, Easter calls us to look forward with optimism, to care for one another and to bring a spirit of renewal into our relationships. As we head into the term break, may this Easter season bring peace to your homes, strength to your hearts and a well-earned chance to rest and recharge. I wish all our students and their families a joyful and safe Easter.

VIEW CALENDAR ONLINE

Community Day is a whole-college event Tomorrow. The whole College joins together at the Glenorchy campus to celebrate our community and Catholic identity.

Students will enjoy an inspiring guest speaker, live music, food trucks, games and more. Community Day forms part of the College’s graduating expectations, meaning all students are expected to attend.

Sports or formal uniform
Free activities, but students can purchase food from food trucks
Hobart students to use buses provided

We’ve launched new Davis Centre page on our website! The Davis Centre is the one-stop- hub of the College connecting, resourcing and supporting College staff and students.

The centre has a wide range of resources and academic services – including print resources, e-resources, study skills and literacy support, ICT support, and printing services.

We’ll also be sharing regular news items from the Davis Centre via the Davis Centre Research Branch News page. There you will be able to read about the latest Davis Centre research. We have just added an update on our research on Kate Mulvany’s Jasper Jones!

Whether you’re a student, parent or staff member you can expect to hear more exciting and regular updates from the Davis Centre in the future!

Faith and Mission Update

Make Jesus Real - Studies of Religion presentations

It was an absolute pleasure to work with students and staff from Year 11 at GYC, using the Make Jesus Real philosophy. We tended to focus on Mental Wealth and a new acronym MAD – Making a Difference (just like Jesus). The students were extremely receptive in discovering how they can make a positive difference in their own lives and others live at home, school and in the community. We discussed the power of positiveness and how we impact those around us – in both negative and positive ways.

We shared suggestions concerning future jobs, social media, drugs, vaping and charity. It was decided to get behind the Project Compassion water appeal by bringing coins (Change for Change) or using our cards (tap for tap water) next Thursday in the Home Room Cup – seeing which home room can raise the most funds for Project Compassion.

We also looked at making a difference to our planet and to our health. We actually spoke about taking care of ourselves and spoke about the impact of social media and especially ‘fads’ such a vaping. We looked at the acronym MAD – Making a Difference (just like Jesus).

The students were amazing (plus their super staff) and we had a real ‘magic’ day – please ask them about their day with ‘Magic Marty’. Hopefully, they will positively engage you with ideas about ‘Making a Difference’. I have no doubt that our planet and its future is in good hands if this is the calibre of young men and women coming through our schools.

There have been many staff, students, parents and Alumni who have been involved in the various DoSomething!@GYC programs during Term One. The College appreciates all of those who are able to assist in the various activities. A summary of Term 1:

Sport

Tennis (8 teams), Basketball (9 teams), Girls Volleyball (6 teams), Boys Cricket (1 team), Athletics and Rowing. The following teams have all made the Southern SATIS Grand Finals this week: The Boys 1st Basketball, Girls 1st Basketball, both Girls 2nd Basketball Team’s, Girls 1st Volleyball and two of the Girls 2nd Volleyball Teams.

Shields won: Athletics: Southern & State SATIS Co-Education, Girls and Boys Senior Shields.
Staff involved: Brett Stephenson, Luca Perri, Max Denehey, Brodie Jeavons, Mackenzie Banks, Karen Caporelli, Kylie Briers, Daniel Purton, Pete Taylor, Jeremy Dooley, Sonya Bacic, Josh Youl, Karen McCulloch, Nethmi Hewapathirana, Hamish Johnson, Peter Di Venuto, Mel Brown, Jen MacGibbon, Ollie Kelly, Graidy Schottmeier, Brendan Kull and Luke Everard.

Arts

Preparation for the College Musical has started along with Life Drawing which has been popular this year, the new initiative of the Craft Collective at the Glenorchy Campus and there have been some lunchtime concerts.

Staff involved: Jane Milburn, Ben Hay, Matt Stolp, Gill Andrews, Zoe Smith and Andre Lobanov.

Clubs & Societies

It has been exciting to see students and staff being involved in a variety of activities during lunchtimes and after school representing the College in Debating, Chess Club, AFL Society (Art, Film & Literature), Global Awareness & Languages Society, Media Mingle and Writers Express.

Community Service

The Breakfast Club once again has seen many students gather to share their mornings having a weekly catch-up. It has been wonderful to see the students be involved with the Justice Action Committee and Harmony Day while the leaders have given their time in various community service opportunities.

Congratulations

Football: The following GYC students for being selected in the 2025 Tasmania Devils Coates Talent League U18 Boys Squad: Riley Walters, Jack Miller, Jack Gilligan, Jasper Hay, Wilbur McMurray, Archie Devine, Ben Barwick, Hugh McCallum, Anthony Volta, Lochie Davey, Jade Clark, and Tom Prokopiec.

Rowing: Zoe Smith and Abbie Smith (GYC) are competing in the schoolgirls double for GYC and under Tasmanian University Boat Club.

Athletics: The following GYC students for being selected to represent Tasmania this week at the Australian Athletics Track and Field Championships. Current: Bailey Van Den Broek (U18), Nikolai Middendorp-Costa (U18), Arielle Cannell (U20), Ben Korotki (U20), Luke Palmer (U20) & Cooper Smythe (U20).

Arielle Cannell (above) recently competed in the Hammer Throw at the New Zealand National Athletics Carnival. She finished 1st in the U18, and 4th in the Open Divisions.

Tasmanian Institute of Sport Talent Search

The Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) is proud to announce the launch of their Talent ID for 2032 program. This May, the TIS will be conducting a series of testing days in Hobart, Launceston & Penguin, involving junior athletes aged between 12 and 22, with the aim of finding Tasmania’s next young sporting stars in anticipation of the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games in Brisbane.

If you or someone you know might be interested in participating register to attend a testing session.
