Turn up. Work hard. Be kind.
These three short catchphrases have become a mantra which I have used with students over the past few years. It is a formula; a simple one, but one which works. Each part of this formula is important.
Turn up – Showing up is the first step to achieving anything, whether it is school, work or with personal commitments. Consistency builds trust and keeps us moving forward.
Work hard – Effort leads to progress. Talent alone often isn’t enough; persistence, resilience and commitment are what make the difference between success and inaction.
Be kind – How we treat others shapes our relationships and character. Kindness is one of the most powerful qualities we can possess. It is much more than being ‘nice’; kindness is about empathy, respect and the willingness to make a positive impact.
A message now, to our students - let us start the year as we mean to continue. I urge them all to follow the formula and apply it to all they do. The year ahead is full of possibility. For Year 11s, this time of transition is exciting but it can also be daunting. There are a lot of ‘firsts’ to navigate but the beauty of GYC is that in no time at all, they will have found their niche and any hesitations, long behind them. Our Year 12s are embarking on their final year of compulsory education and it will be a year of ‘lasts’ for many.
