Surfing – Australian Interschools Surfing Championships
The Australian Inter-Schools Surfing Championships took place last week at the iconic Kirra surf break in Queensland. Representing the College, Poppy Woodberry, Amelie Brown, and Charlotte Beach formed a strong team in the Year 10/11/12 Girls Division. They showcased impressive skills, finishing third in the first heat and securing second place in the second heat, which advanced them to the Quarter Finals.
The competition featured a challenging relay-style format. Each surfer began on the beach, sprinted to the water, paddled out to the surf break, and mustered enough time for their teammates to follow. The final surfer had to sprint back to the beach to complete the relay, all within a strict 30-minute timeframe.
The College is immensely proud of the girls for their determination and effort throughout the event. Additionally, the experience was enriched by their stay at the Surfing High Performance Centre, making it a memorable and rewarding journey for the team.
Girls’ Football – Rounds 1 to 3 Summary
The Girls have made a dominant start to the season, recording three strong wins with impressive team efforts and standout individual performances.
In Round 1, they opened with a resounding 95-point win over a courageous Collegiate team. The forward line was kept busy thanks to outstanding skills, with multiple goals from Amber Bumford, Lacey Tilyard, Mia Anderson and Arielle Cannell. Other strong contributors included Evie Bingham, Maya Free, Isabelle Opray, and Eliza Wylie, with a great goal from Isobel Ferguson capping off the match.
Round 2 saw a 57-point win over The Friends’ School, despite some inaccuracy in front of goal. Evie Bingham starred with a dominant four-quarter effort, supported by Mia Sullivan, Willow Rowley and Breeanna Wright moving the ball efficiently. Millie Richardson was dangerous up forward with three goals, while Eliza Garay, Halle Atkinson, Bella Ball and Amelia Milne impressed with their tenacity.
In Round 3, GYC continued their strong form, defeating Friends by 70 points. Evie Bingham was again best afield, with highlights including two long-range drop punt goals. Isabelle Opray stood out in defence, while Matilda Kaye, Lily McConnon, Willow Rowley and Arielle Cannell were among the best. Contributions from Maya Free, Ava Wylie, Indiana Wiggins and others helped set up scoring opportunities for Millie Richardson, Olivia Lane, and Amber Bumford. Captain Amelia Milne capped off her ruck efforts with a fantastic goal.
