We Are Pilgrims on the Journey

This phrase comes from the hymn The Servant Song by Richard Gillard and aptly describes those who are travelling to Italy in October for a Saints of Italy Pilgrimage. I am privileged to be joining Archbishop Tony and 18 pilgrims (comprised of CET Principals, TCEO and Archdiocese of Hobart staff) on this journey of growth and transformation.

What is a Pilgrimage?
A pilgrimage is a journey to places of special spiritual, historical, or religious significance. For Christians, pilgrimages have been undertaken for centuries as an opportunity to deepen faith, pray, reflect, and walk in the footsteps of the saints and early followers of Jesus.

A pilgrimage is an intentional spiritual experience. Pilgrims visit sacred sites, celebrate Mass, share prayer and fellowship, and take time to consider how their faith shapes their daily lives. The journey itself becomes an opportunity for personal growth, renewal, and a deeper connection with God.

Our 2026 pilgrimage to Italy will visit some of the most significant sites in the Catholic tradition: Rome (including the Vatican), Assisi, Siena, Milan, offering a unique opportunity to encounter the Church's rich history, spirituality, and heritage.

If you have a particular prayer request, please send these to me before September 30. For example, you might want me to pray your prayer request in St Peter’s Square, the Abbey of Montecassino, the Tomb of St Peter or the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi.

At GYC, the phrase, ‘we are pilgrims on the journey’ symbolises our community of learners. We are all on a journey of growth. We travel together, learning from one another and supporting each other toward a shared vision. It calls us to walk with humility, hope and service.

The Davis Centre has been busy supporting students’ research needs. This includes providing access to physical resources, as well as guiding students to our digital resources to help them locate accurate, credible, and curated academic content.

One resource proving particularly valuable is Informit, one of Australia's leading research databases, which provides access to academic journals and scholarly publications.

You can access Informit via the Davis Centre homepage (GYC login required) to conduct research both on campus and from home.

SATIS Representative Day

Congratulations to all students who participated in the SATIS Representative Day on Friday 4 September. Guilford Young College was exceptionally well represented, with 31 students selected across basketball, soccer and tennis, highlighting the depth of talent within our sporting program. Students competed with pride throughout the day, showcasing outstanding skill, teamwork and sportsmanship while representing both GYC and Southern SATIS. We are incredibly proud of all students who earned representative selection and contributed to a successful day of competition.

Southern SATIS Swimming Carnival

The GYC Swimming Team enjoyed an outstanding day at the Southern SATIS Swimming Carnival held last week.

Congratulations to our Open Girls and Open Boys teams, captained by Kate Shields and Xavier Moncrieff, who were awarded both the Senior Girls Shield and the Senior Co-Educational Shield.

A special congratulations to the following swimmers on their individual achievements:

• Alet Le Grange – 3rd, 50m Breaststroke

• Riley O'Connor – 3rd, 100m Freestyle

• Hugo Barrett – 1st, 50m Freestyle MC

• Elsa Pearsell – 1st, 50m Breaststroke; 3rd, 100m Freestyle

• Matilda Forrest – 1st, 50m Backstroke; 3rd, 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly

Congratulations also to our relay teams:

• Girls’ Medley Relay (Alet Le Grange, Anna Clingeleffer, Elsa Pearsell and Matilda Forrest) – 2nd Place

• Girls’ Freestyle Relay (Anna Clingeleffer, Elsa Pearsell, Matilda Forrest and Ella Nosworthy) – 2nd Place

The team now looks forward to the upcoming State SATIS Swimming Carnival, which will be held this Friday. Well done to all swimmers on their outstanding efforts and for representing GYC with pride & determination.

SATIS Finals

The Southern SATIS finals are well underway, with GYC teams competing across soccer, netball and badminton.

Soccer

GYC’s Boys 1st Soccer Gold team contested their Southern SATIS Grand Final against the Friends’ School on Monday. They had a convincing win defeating Friends 6-2. The Team will now play in the State Final on Wednesday 30 September.

The Girls’ 1st Gold and 2nd Red Soccer teams, will also compete in their semi-finals. GYC Gold finished on top of the ladder and will face Fahan in the 1 v 4 semi-final, while GYC Red will face Fahan in the 2 v 3 semi-final, with both teams looking to secure a place in the Grand Final.

The 2nd Boys’ Soccer competition is heading towards an exciting finish, with the Southern SATIS Grand Final set for 28 September. GYC Red and GYC White are both still in contention, with the final round results to determine which team will earn a place in the Grand Final.

Badminton

Finals for the Southern Schools Badminton Competition commence this Friday. GYC had six teams competing throughout the season, with the competition proving to be extremely competitive across all divisions. GYC Maroon (Girls’ B) and GYC Yellow (Mixed) have both secured a place in their respective Grand Finals, with further details to be confirmed.

For our 1st Grade teams, there is also the opportunity to progress beyond the Southern SATIS competition. Should they win their respective Southern SATIS Grand Finals, they will go on to compete against the NSATIS winners in a State SATIS Final. All State SATIS Finals will be hosted by the Southern SATIS region this year on Wednesday 30 September.
