Languages Week
GYC offers a wide range of language opportunities: TASC French and Japanese, as well as Italian in partnership with St Mary’s College. In addition, students can access more than 15 background language speaker (NIAL) exams.
Last week, GYC celebrated the diversity of both the languages taught at the College and the languages and cultures represented within our community. Led by the Global Cultures and Languages Society, students enjoyed a vibrant program of activities and guest speakers.
Highlights included Sushi and Chat with Dr. Emerald King, Head of the Japanese Department at the University of Tasmania, who spoke about study pathways such as High Achiever Programs and opportunities to combine study abroad with languages and combined degrees. French exchange students Raphael and Timothée shared their experiences in Australia, while Artin gave a fascinating talk on Iran. At Glenorchy, students also enjoyed playing the traditional South-East Asian game of Chapteh.
Bubble Tea proved especially popular, with proceeds going to Médecins Sans Frontières.
On Friday, Japanese Level 3 students, Thomas, Ciaran, Zali and Jessica, proudly represented the College in the statewide JATNET Speech Competition. Congratulations to Jessica who received an outstanding third place. We are so proud of all four students for their effort, courage and achievement.
