Welcome to Term 3

Welcome to Term 3! This term is often described as a significant stretch of the academic year – an important time for students to consolidate their learning, refine their goals and take meaningful steps towards their post-school pathways.

For our Year 12s, this term marks the beginning of the final phase of their secondary education. The next few months will be intense but rewarding and we are here to support them every step of the way. Our Year 11s are also entering a critical period, with increasing demands on them and their time and opportunities to develop leadership aspirations and course clarity for 2026. This is the term where habits and mindsets really begin to shape what’s possible in Year 12 and beyond.

And of course, there is college life outside of the classroom and DoSomething!@GYC continues to provide a myriad of co-curricular activities in which students can engage and one that’s very close on the horizon is Grease. Do you have your tickets? This is going to be a fantastic show – don’t miss it - August 6-9 in our wonderful Don Bosco theatre at the Glenorchy campus.

Now, as we launch into Term 3, I thank our staff for the time and energy they have already put into preparing for the weeks ahead and to you, our families, your support, as always, is greatly appreciated. Let’s approach this term with purpose, optimism and care for ourselves and each other.

Staff Success!

As part of Guilford Young College’s Reconciliation Action Plan, staff are committed to embedding First Nations perspectives in the classroom. Casandra Christensen, Christina Martini, and Kristin Leeds presented at the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) national conference on their paper Decolonising the Curriculum: Enhancing Student Engagement with Kate Mulvany’s Jasper Jones through Reflection and Voice.  

In addition, former Davis Centre Leader Dr. Demelza Hall and Kristin Leeds presented at the Shared Futures Conference at the University of York Towards Decolonising White Curricula: Anticipatory Pedagogy in the Australian English Classroom.

Decolonising the curriculum is essential to fostering inclusive, critical learning environments that acknowledge and value First Nations voices, challenge dominant narratives, and empower all students to engage with diverse perspectives.

Student Success!

Congratulations to Year 12 students Thomas and Bede on achieving excellent results in Programming Fundamentals through the University of Tasmania’s High Achiever Program (HAP). The program offers academic challenge, subsidised costs, University credit, ATAR and TCE points, plus access to university facilities.

NAIDOC Week at GYC

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It’s an opportunity to come together and learn about, acknowledge, and celebrate the rich heritage of the First Nations peoples of Australia. The 2025 theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’, celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors. 

As part of these celebrations, students and staff on the Hobart and Glenorchy campuses were encouraged to decorate a gum leaf with colours and empowering words, then add them to the NAIDOC Healing Tree. It was a special way to build connection and unity amongst our community, and prompt respect and hope for future generations.

Other NAIDOC Week activities included a special visit from Anthony Dewis, a cultural leader from the Torres Strait Islands, an on-Country experience to New Norfolk with knowledge sharer, Linton Burgess, and the opportunity to learn about First Nations living culture with a clap stick workshop.
