College Life

Through our words and actions, I hope you are all aware that, underpinned by love and respect, we value growth, connection and courage at Guilford Young College. Living up to these values is part of our Lux Nostra Graduating Expectations and students have been working hard to meet these. We look forward to farewelling all our Year 12 students at the graduation ceremony next term and celebrating their achievements.

As part of valuing individual growth, students are asked to participate in one of the many DoSomething!@GYC opportunities at the College. We have a proud sporting tradition, and it is fabulous to see so many of our students involved in sports, ranging from social rosters through to competing in state finals. However, there are so many opportunities beyond sport - our fabulous musical opens this week; students involved in the Vinnies Winter Appeal; or the Philosothon to name just a few.

It brings the staff of the College much joy to see the growth of our students as they participate in one of the many opportunities outside of the classroom. I am confident that the students I teach will remember their involvement in the DoSomething!@GYC program long after they have forgotten the lessons in my classroom.

Bienvenue à nos visiteurs français !

We're thrilled to welcome Raphaël and Timothée, who are visiting us from France and joining the French 2/3 class until the end of August.

Raphaël comes from the picturesque town of Colmar in the Alsace region, while Timothée hails from the vibrant city of Bordeaux. Currently on their summer holidays back home, they’ve swapped the northern hemisphere for a Tasmanian winter and so far, they’re loving it!

Both students say they’re enjoying the slower pace of College life, Tasmania’s mild climate, and the laid-back attitude of Australians. One surprise? The food! They’ve noticed quite a difference compared to what they’re used to at home, but they’re embracing the adventure with curiosity.

Both students will be presenting a short talk on their hometowns and school life during Languages Week (11 August) If you see them around campus, don’t hesitate to say bonjour!

GYC Ski Trip

Towards the end of the Term 2 school holidays, a group of 32 GYC students and four staff embarked on an exciting adventure to Mount Hotham for a Ski and Snowboarding Trip. After arriving on Sunday afternoon, the group settled into their accommodation at The Lodge— a warm and welcoming, family-run venue—before being fitted with all the necessary gear and taking part in an orientation session to learn some basic skills.

The following four days were packed with daily lessons, additional coaching from our experienced GYC staff, night skiing, and plenty of opportunities for free skiing and snowboarding with friends. It was a fantastic week filled with fun, personal growth, and the chance to build new and lasting friendships. Students not only developed their skiing and snowboarding skills but also had the opportunity to gain recognition through the Outdoor Education Experiences A Award.

A big thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm, positivity, and great team spirit throughout the week. Sincere thanks also to Mr Ramon Jacobs, Mrs Jane Stephenson, Mr Ollie Kelly, and Mrs Mel Brown for their outstanding organisation, guidance, and care. After such a successful and memorable trip, the staff are hopeful that the Ski and Snowboarding Trip will become a much-anticipated annual event in the GYC calendar.

SATIS Intrastate Tournament

The annual SATIS Intrastate Tournament will take place on Friday September 5, featuring a series of exciting matches between Southern and Northern SATIS representative teams. Competitions will be held in Girls and Boys Basketball, Soccer, and Tennis at venues in Warrane, Hobart.

Nominations are now open for students who have represented the College in their chosen sport and participated in at least 50% of the regional roster this season.

• Mae Riley-Smith recently competed in Brisbane at the U18 National Diving competition.

• Blake Doyle has been selected to attend the Men’s 20 & Under Australian Netball Selection Camp in Canberra this August.

• Matilda Kaye recently selected in the U23 Lutruwita Netball Team set to compete in Victoria this August.
