GYC has three tennis teams entered in the 2018 SATIS competition.
The 1st grade boys began their season on Tuesday afternoon with a tightly contested competition against The Hutchins School and the 1st and 2nd grade girls played their first matches on Thursday afternoon.
Manager of the boys’ team, BRETT STEPHENSON, writes
Boys’ tennis was off to a flyer on Wednesday 20 March with their first match against Hutchins at GYC Hobart.
There was a team of six with some of the team playing either singles or doubles.
Most of the sets were close and it was 3-1 Hutchins way with the last 2 sets in the balance and ending with a 7-6 tie break set in the last 2 sets. The final result was a 4-2 loss (33 games to 26 games).
Jakeb Rhodes and Joshua Moon were overpowered in their doubles match but Sam Plunkett-Smith and Jordan Petryk played some inspired doubles tennis to overcome the Hutchins’ first doubles pairing.
Sam and Jordan had tight tussles in their singles matches and were very competitive in their respective 3-6 and 4-6 losses.
Holgar Lethan showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with this roster as he cruised to a 6-2 win at line 3 and Will Kirkwood was outlasted 6-7 by his Hutchins opponent.
The boys play The Friends’ School next week at Friends’.
Although we don’t have any results or details from the girls’ matches in either grade, we do have this lovely photo of the 1st grade girls’ team.
