A depleted athletics team brought home the Open Co-educational Shield and plenty of pride when Guilford Young College competed at the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (SATIS) Athletics Carnival in Launceston on Saturday 22 September.

The boys came second in the Open Boys’ Shield, only 1.5 points behind The Hutchins School, and the girls came third in the Open Girls’ Shield.

With a number of the athletes filling in for missing team members, all competitors put in huge efforts for personally satisfying results.

The outstanding athlete was Liam Shelton who repeated his SSATIS success by winning the Open javelin, discus and shot put competitions. Although he easily out-threw his competition in the discus (almost 11m more than second place) and javelin (9m longer than second), there was only .07m between first and second in the shot put.

Similarly, Jacob Nolan had a great meet, repeating his success in the long jump and the triple jump, coming fourth in the 100m and anchoring the 4×100 Open boys’ relay team to second place.

Bec Kovacic repeated her SSATIS success by winning the 100m but went one better in the 200m which she won in Launceston after a second placing in Hobart. She came second in the long jump and also anchored the Open girls’ relay to third place.

Agnes Sakina (below, left) also went one place better, winning the javelin. She, too, was  a relay team member.
