Tasmanian cycling sensation Madeleine Fasnacht is now Queen of the Mountain for the 2017 Tour of King Valley (Victoria) which was raced at the weekend as part of the Cycling Australia National Road Series. It was contested over four stages on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Maddy and Ainsleigh Gray, both Year 12 students at GYC, rode for the Tasmanian Institute of Sport Road Team.
Maddy took the Queen of the Mountain classification with 30 points; her nearest rival accumulated 13 points. She also placed second in both the general classification and the U/23 general classification, after the four stages. Maddy also took the bronze medal in the 9 km individual time trial. She placed 16th in the criterium, fifth in the road race and seventh in the loop.
Her efforts helped the Tasmanian women’s team to win the women’s team event from a field of nine teams.
The Tasmanian men’s team placed 17th in 23 teams.
Although not achieving the results of his teammate, Ainsleigh gained valuable race experience competing against some of the top up-and-coming men’s cyclists in the country. This weekend of racing should hold him in good stead as he prepares for the track season and the nationals.
Congratulations to both Maddy and Ainsleigh for their wonderful efforts.
