Former GYC rowers are holding their own the national stage.

Matthew Byrne, Alec Patterson, William White and James Cocker competed at the rowing nationals in Sydney earlier in the year.  They combined to win silver in the U/23 lightweight four.

Alec also won silver in the U/21 lightweight single.

Matthew Byrne, James Cocker, Alec Paterson, William White take silver at the rowing nationals in Sydney.

Alec and Matthew were invited to trial for the Australian team.

There were five competitors in their race, with the top three chosen. Alec came second and Mathew fourth, only three seconds behind the third place-getter. Unfortunately for Alec there were two boys in the U/21 category who decided to row in the U/23 trials (this age group travels to Europe, while the younger rowers race in Sydney). Those two rowers did not make the U/23 team but their times put them first and second in the U/21 category, relegating Alec to fourth – a devastating outcome.

According to Mrs Michelle Byrne, Matthew was happy with his race as he improved his personal best by eight seconds.

Next year both Alec and Matthew will be again in the U/21 age group and the other two boys will have moved to the U/23s.

Mrs Byrne said that both Alec and Matt already had next year in their sights as they now knew what was required of them.
