Athletics sensation JACK HALE, a new  Year 11 student to GYC this week, is being pursued by organisers of the Stawell Gift, Australia’s richest footrace.   see the Mercury      in the photo from the Briggs Athletics Classic held in Hobart recently, the runner on the right, Jacob Despard, is also a GYC student, Year 12.

Former GYC student MATT BEVILACQUA, now a life saving champion, competed at the Burnie Surf Carnival at the weekend.  see the Mercury here and here   An earlier feature article says of Bevilacqua:

All the while Bevilacqua was completing his studies at Hobart’s Guilford Young College, achieving the score that would ultimately see him offered a place to study medicine at the University of Tasmania.  But at 18, Bevilacqua was not ready to give up the sport he so desperately loved to focus solely on study so he strapped his surf ski and board to the roof of his trusty old Hyundai and drove to Queensland where he began training under Mooloolaba coach Michael King.     see full article
