Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind

leads

Footloose leads: Matthew Harris as Ren and Holly Gregg as Ariel

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the adjustment to his new high school. What he isn’t prepared for are the local laws – including a ban on dancing – which are the brainchild of a local preacher bent on exercising control over the town’s youths. When the Reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her heart on Ren, her boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation and many of the locals are eager to believe the worst about the new kid.

With its Oscar’-nominated hit score (the film soundtrack album has sold over 15 million copies world-wide) the celebrated film musical now bursts explosively on to the GYC stage.

A large cast of more than 30 young GYC thespians will be led by Matthew Harris playing Ren McCormack (remember Matt as Harold Hill’s sidekick Marcellus Washburn in The Music Man) and Holly Gregg playing Ariel Moore (remember Holly as the delightfully scheming mother, Mrs Paroo).

The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

Footloose first appeared as a film in 1984, with Kevin Bacon as Ren. Another film was released in 2011 with Kenny Wormald in the title role.

Footloose, the stage musical, from 1998, is based on the original screenplay by Dean Pitchford; lyrics by Dean Pitchford; music by Tom Snow with additional music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman. The stage adaptation was done by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie.

This GYC production is under the direction of Chelle Burtt, actor, recording artist, teacher and principal of the Chelle Burtt Theatre School.

special treat

A special feature was added to this year’s musical schools’ matinee when a Q and A was held after the show. After the final curtain, the leads and several principals were joined on stage by the show’s director, and towards the end by some of the crew, to answer questions from the students. A number of questions about the show, behind-the-scenes and kissing techniques were asked from around the auditorium. It was a great 10 minutes, enjoyed by the students and cast members alike.

Today was a big day for the young cast. After the excitement of a massive opening night last night, they will perform twice today: the matinee (another full auditorium – and videoed) and the public show tonight. The season continues Friday night before the final curtain comes down on Saturday night.

The new Don Bosco Creative Art Centre theatre holds just over 600 patrons. Last night, for the opening of FOOTLOOSE, all but a few seats were filled. Pictured is a section of the large audience not long before the curtain went up. And what entertainment they were about to experience!

The GYC musical for 2016, Footloose, is about to burst on to the stage – tomorrow night!

It had its first full run on the Don Bosco Creative Arts Centre stage with the band on Saturday afternoon. It was a thoroughly entertaining, high energy, toe-tapping experience – and that was only the first dress rehearsal.  Director Chelle Burtt, choreographer Emma Stone and a number of other production technicians are pulling together a wonderful show.

sitzprobe

The Footloose sitzprobe was held on Saturday 23 July in the Glenorchy PAC.  It was an exciting time of high excitement and anticipation, as this was the first time that that cast and the musicians had come together. It sounded wonderful. A big, inviting sound with plenty of toe-tapping beat was produced by the musicians and the cast was high energy, switched on and confident. The PAC reverberated with a sense of enjoyment.  (for more details and photos, see the news item, Sitzprobe milestone for musical)

A MEDIA STUDIES PROJECT

Leading man Matthew Harris (this time, behind the camera) uses his involvement in Footloose as the basis for a Media Studies assignment.  When the assignment is handed in, it could be used to promote the musical.  Watch this space!  Helping him out are Ariel (leading lady Holly Gregg) about to have words with her father, Rev’d Moore (Alec Hastie) on location in Houghton House.
