Guilford Young College has 11 young athletes representing Tasmania at a national level this week and next.

Nine are competing this week (in athletics and hockey) and two next week (rowing).

ATHLETICS

Four GYC athletes are currently competing at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney.

They are Year 12 students Alice Randall, Liam Shelton, Bec Kovacic and Year 11 student Jacob Nolan.

They are part of a 50-member Tasmanian junior track and field team competing at Sydney Olympic Park from March 14-18.

The annual championships attracts about 2000 of the country’s next generation athletes. Qualification for the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships and Youth Olympic Games (Buenos Aires) are also on the line for many of the athletes competing over the next five days.

Their disciplines:

Alice Randall, U20 10km Walk; Liam Shelton,U18 and U20 Javelin, U18 Discus; Bec Kovacic U20 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay; Jacob Nolan, U17 Triple Jump, Long Jump.

HOCKEY

Four students are playing at the U18 National Hockey Championships, currently being held in Launceston.

Those students are Aiden van Staden (captain) Josh Brooks, Harvey Bessell and Georgia Williams (co-captain) and Laura Spandler.

ROWING

rowYear 11 students Christopher McGuinness-Terry (right) and Tom Messer (left) will compete at the national rowing regatta next week.

The Australian Rowing National Championships will be held from 19-25 March at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

The event will comprise the Australian Open Rowing Championships, King’s and Queen’s Cups Interstate Regatta and the Australian Open Schools Rowing Championships.
